The last time the Victoria Hurricanes and Texas Spartans met, they couldn’t finish the game. This time around they finished as the Hurricanes won 38-22.
The Hurricanes opened up with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Bryant Wolf to Doug Ford. Wolf added the two-point conversion with 10:19 left in the quarter. Wolf scampered in from 10-yards out to give Victoria six more points, 14-0 with 1:54 left in the 1st stanza.
In the second quarter, an ill-advised punt return turned into 2 points for the Spartans. Showtime Williams had a hard time getting a handle on the punt return and took into the end zone only to be tackled early in the quarter. It would take 12 minutes but the Hurricanes added a touchdown that redeemed Williams. Wolf tossed a 35 yard TD pass to him while Colby Wilson caught the 2-point conversion. It was 22-2 going into halftime.
The third quarter saw a lot of action towards the end of it. With 3;25 left in the quarter, the Spartans quarterback Sherard Ellis tossed a 38-yard touchdown to Derick Matthews. The two pointer was good and it became 22-10. The Hurricanes answered quickly with a 57-yard pass to Anthony Washington. They converted the 2 point conversion with a pass to Keith Hradek.
Heading to the 4th quarter, the Spartans were not done scoring. With 6:54 left in the game, Ellis found pay-dirt with a 3-yard QB keeper. The Hurricanes went back to work on the next series and Washington caught his second TD of the game, this time a 48-yard catch from Wolf. Deon Brown added two points with a run. On the next series, Donnie Henderson scored from 3-yards and the final score of the game.
The Hurricanes struggled in the second half, giving up an unanswered 20 points. With the win, Victoria does get home field advantage throughout the playoffs and a first round bye.
