The #13th ranked Texas Spartans of Houston hosted the #5th ranked Victoria Hurricanes at Fun Stadium.
It was not fun for the Spartans as they fell to the Hurricanes, 26-0. If it wasn’t the field with its slippery conditions, then it was the “Orange Crush” defense giving the Spartans offense problems.
After a scoreless first period of play, the second quarter finally saw some movement of the scoreboard as WR Robert Armstrong caught a 12-yard TD pass from QB Bryant Wolf. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good. The score in the latter part of the second quarter was 6-0 with 3:50 left. Armstrong disrupted the next Spartan offensive drive by stripping QB Sherard Ellis of the ball and the Hurricanes Joshua Herrera recovered it on the Victoria 35-yard line. After a personal foul which was a late hit on Wolf, the Hurricanes were at the 43-yard line. Two plays later, Wolf found RB Anthony Washington on a wheel route. Washington made the catch and scampered in for six points. The 2-point pass conversion was no good. With 1:37 left in the half, the offense converted the Ellis fumble into points. The halftime score was Victoria 12, Texas (Houston) 0.
DB Showtime Williams intercepted Ellis and took the ball 79-yards, finishing the run off with a Nestea plunge into the end zone with 8:40 in the third quarter. WR Keith Hradek added two points by catching Wolf’s pass to give the Hurricanes 20-0 lead and that’s how it remained for the rest of the stanza.
On a designed play, Wolf ran the quarterback keeper 61-yards to pay dirt with 12:42 left in the game. The 2-point conversion was no good.
Victoria managed to get the Spartans to forfeit the rest of the game with 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter ending it abruptly, but victorious for the Hurricanes, 26-0.
Wolf threw 16 times with 6 completions, 2 touchdown passes, 1 touchdown run, and 2 interceptions. Leading rusher was Wolf with 9 carries and 94 yards. Receiving leader was Anthony Washington with his 47-yard touchdown. Defensively, Jeremy Church led with 3 tackles including 1 for a loss. Victoria has scored 192 points and has allowed 8 points for the season.
